Hyde-Smith pens legislation creating federal penalties for attacks on hospital employees
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) is leading the effort to establish federal criminal penalties for assaulting hospital employees amid rising violence against healthcare workers. The Save Healthcare Workers Act, introduced with Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), aims to deter violence by authorizing federal prosecution of offenders. Studies show high rates of violence against healthcare workers, with 77% of emergency staff encountering violence in 2021 and 81.6% of nurses experiencing workplace violence in 2023. The bill proposes fines and up to 10 years in prison for assaults, matching protections for flight attendants. The act is supported by healthcare organizations and has a House companion bill.

Mississippi State baseball coach vacancy likely to attract high-level candidates, analyst says
SUMMARY: After the recent firing of Chris Lemonis as Mississippi State baseball head coach, the search for his successor is underway under athletic director Zac Selmon. Mississippi State, ranked No. 8 in D1Baseball’s “Top 100 Programs,” struggles recently with a 45-69 SEC record and missing two NCAA Tournaments in three years despite a 2021 national title. The program remains attractive due to passionate fan support, strong tradition, top facilities, and NIL resources. Top candidates include UVA’s Brian O’Connor, Auburn’s Butch Thompson, and Georgia’s Wes Johnson—all with strong records and ties to Mississippi State or SEC baseball.

Bat tests positive for rabies in Tippah County, officials urge precaution
SUMMARY: State health officials in Mississippi have confirmed a bat tested positive for rabies in the northern part of the state. The Mississippi Board of Animal Health (MBAH) was informed by the state Department of Health (MSDH). Two dogs possibly exposed to the rabid bat have been quarantined. Since 1961, Mississippi has had only two confirmed rabies cases in humans and animals, both linked to infected bats. Officials stress the importance of vaccinating pets and avoiding contact with wild animals like bats, raccoons, and foxes. If bitten by a potentially rabid animal, individuals should seek medical treatment promptly.
