Officials using dredges to maintain safe navigation paths along historically low Mississippi River
SUMMARY: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is actively dredging the Mississippi River to maintain safe travel pathways as the waterway hits historically low levels for the second year in a row. Using dustpan dredges, which use water jets to loosen mud and vacuum it away, the corps strives to maintain a 12-foot navigation channel. These dredges can clear a 30-foot-wide section of river in an hour, sometimes operating continuously for 24-hour periods. Leah DeYoung, USACE Dredging Unit Chief, notes that while dredging helps, significant rainfall in key areas is needed to naturally restore the river’s levels.

SUMMARY: Mississippi’s only major-league affiliated team, the Biloxi Shuckers, was eliminated from the 2025 Southern League playoffs after a 4-2 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits in game two of the Division Series. Delta State officials counter rumors as investigation continues into Black student found hanging
SUMMARY: Delta State University and law enforcement held a press conference regarding the death of 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, found hanging on campus.
