Officials promoting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 26
SUMMARY: Federal officials, through the DEA, are hosting a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to combat the U.S. overdose epidemic. The event allows Americans to anonymously dispose of unwanted, expired medications at approximately 4,100 drop-off sites nationwide, including many in Mississippi. Accepted items include tablets, capsules, and sealed liquids, but not syringes or illegal drugs. DEA Special Agent Anessa Daniels-McCaw emphasized the importance of the event, noting over 100,000 drug-related deaths annually. Last year, Mississippi collected 3,437 pounds of medications, and officials hope for increased participation this year.

Public Service Commission fines city of Holly Springs for inadequate utility services
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Public Service Commission announced a $12,500 daily fine against the city of Holly Springs for failing to provide adequate utility services through the Holly Springs Utility Department (HSUD). The fine will continue until the city improves its services or opts to sell the utility. The commission cited mismanagement, including improper use of funds and poor maintenance, resulting in frequent power outages affecting about 12,000 customers, many living outside city limits. The commission may seek to place HSUD under third-party receivership. Despite leadership changes and cooperation from the new mayor, no viable plan to fix HSUD has been presented, prompting regulatory enforcement.
