New DOJ report cites abuses in Georgia's prisons
SUMMARY: A U.S. Department of Justice report highlights grave issues in Georgia’s prisons, revealing a troubling increase in violence, drug abuse, extortion, and sexual abuse. The investigation, conducted over three years, found inmate homicides rose from seven in 2017 to 35 in 2023, with particular abuse against LGBTQ+ inmates. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clark condemned the “chaotic and dangerous environment,” asserting that incarceration should not equate to torture or death. The report includes 13 pages of recommendations for improvement and warns of potential legal action against the state for failing to protect inmates’ rights under the Eighth Amendment.
The Justice Department says Georgia’s prisons are “deliberately indifferent” to un-checked deadly violence, drug use, extortion, and sexual abuse.

Georgia offers at least 16 days of early in-person voting leading up to the November 5th election, with 8.2 million registered voters.
With more than 300,000 early voters turning out to cast their ballots in the 2024 election, Georgia has more than doubled the turnout they had in 2020 and 2022.
