New district attorney for northeast Mississippi takes oath of office

SUMMARY: Jason Herring has been appointed as the new district attorney for the Tupelo area, overseeing criminal cases in seven Mississippi counties, including Alcorn County. Herring plans to prioritize key criminal cases and enhance prosecutions throughout the district while successfully retaining the current staff, including assistant DAs and investigators, during the transition. He will serve until a special election in November 2024, which will decide who will complete Weddle’s term ending in 2028.
