SUMMARY: The U.S. is on “La Niña watch,” with the Climate Prediction Center forecasting a short, weak La Niña forming this fall, similar to last winter. Despite its weakness, La Niña influences weather patterns: typically causing drier, warmer conditions in the southern U.S. and northern Mexico, and wetter weather in the Pacific Northwest and Ohio Valley. Last winter reflected these trends, though some areas like east Texas and Kentucky saw wetter conditions. La Niña’s strongest impact usually occurs in winter months and may also intensify the hurricane season, with NOAA predicting a 50% chance of an above-normal hurricane season this year.

The Nashville Metro Courthouse barely made the list at 100, noted for its grand but stern, classical style. Kentucky’s Owensboro City Hall was 44th, while Alabama had five entries, the most by any state. The survey’s top ugliest public building was Flint’s Municipal Center in Michigan. Many listed buildings were courthouses or judicial centers.

www.wkrn.com – The Associated Press – 2025-08-16 18:06:00

SUMMARY: Ethan Guo, an American pilot and influencer, was charged by Chilean authorities for submitting a false flight plan and unauthorized landing in Antarctica. The charges were dropped after Guo agreed to donate $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation, leave Chile when possible, and avoid reentry for three years. Guo’s defense claims he had authorization to deviate his route due to weather and technical issues. Guo insists he received explicit permission to land at the Chilean base amid instrument failures and dangerous conditions. Prosecutors argue he endangered global air traffic. Guo has been stranded in Antarctica for weeks due to severe winter and plane restrictions.
