Monday 10PM First Weather: Tropical Storm Rafael forms, expected to become hurricane
SUMMARY: Tropical storm Raphael has formed in the Caribbean and is forecasted to become a hurricane as it moves toward the Gulf. Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin noted that while it’s still uncertain how it may affect us, the storm is expected to weaken rapidly in the Gulf due to unfavorable conditions like wind shear and dry air. Current maximum sustained winds are 45 mph, and discussions about its path indicate that models are split between the northern Gulf and western routes. Overall, the storm’s environmental factors will play a significant role in its weakening as it approaches land.

SUMMARY: A gas leak caused by a construction crew led to an explosion and fire in Avendale, resulting in the death of 75-year-old Dolores Gabriel. Firefighters were responding to the leak when a cement truck accidentally ruptured a gas line while paving for a new library. Gabriel’s adult son sustained severe burns while attempting to rescue her, and two children along with other family members were treated for fire-related injuries. A cousin witnessed the explosion, expressing devastation as they rushed to the scene. Fire crews from the Herbert Wallace West Wego and Avendale departments quickly extinguished the flames.

Tomorrow, expect more clouds and the approach of a front, with light rain likely by Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. This will be minimal accumulation. Wednesday’s rain should clear by midday. Expect cooler temperatures and additional rain chances throughout the week into Sunday, as another area of low pressure approaches from the West. Overall, temperatures will remain in the 60s to near 70°F with frequent clouds.
