SUMMARY: A U.S. Coast Guard report on the 2023 Titan submersible disaster concluded it was caused by preventable safety failures and deliberate efforts by OceanGate, its operator, to avoid oversight. The implosion killed all five aboard, including CEO Stockton Rush. The report criticized OceanGate’s flawed safety culture, noting ignored “red flags,” falsified safety info, and inadequate design and inspection processes. Financial pressures led to outdoor winter storage, damaging the vessel’s hull. The report calls for stronger regulation of private deep-sea tourism. SUMMARY: A recent AP-NORC poll reveals widespread stress among U.S. adults over rising grocery prices, with half citing it as a major stressor. Financial worries extend to housing, savings, income, and healthcare, disproportionately affecting younger people, women, and Hispanic adults. Lower-income Americans feel the pinch most severely, but anxiety spans all income levels. Many, especially under 45, use “buy now, pay later” services for essentials, entertainment, and medical care despite repayment risks. Individuals like Adam Bush and Shandal LeSure highlight struggles balancing rising costs with limited incomes, resorting to cheaper stores and pay-later plans to cope amid ongoing economic pressures.
