Mississippi’s top court to hear arguments over spending public money on private schools
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court will hear arguments over a state law allocating $10 million of federal pandemic relief money to private schools’ infrastructure grants. A chancery judge blocked the law after a lawsuit argued it would disadvantage public schools. The state legislature planned to spend most of the $1.8 billion received for pandemic relief during the last session, including creating grant programs for private schools. Public schools are not eligible for the infrastructure grants but can access interest-free loans. The lawsuit argues that federal funds were appropriated to the state treasury so should be accessible to all schools.
