SUMMARY: Mississippi has reported its second death from West Nile virus in 2024, confirmed by the Mississippi State Department of Health. Details on the victim are not disclosed, but both deaths involved individuals with underlying health conditions. So far this year, there have been 27 reported cases, primarily in central Mississippi, particularly in Rankin, Hinds, and Madison counties. The commission cited mismanagement, including improper use of funds and poor maintenance, resulting in frequent power outages affecting about 12,000 customers, many living outside city limits. The commission may seek to place HSUD under third-party receivership. Despite leadership changes and cooperation from the new mayor, no viable plan to fix HSUD has been presented, prompting regulatory enforcement.
