Mississippi to cut prices with tax-free weekend
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s tax-free weekend allows parents to save on back-to-school shopping. From Friday, July 28, at 12:01 a.m. until Saturday, July 29, at midnight, shoppers won’t have to pay the 7% sales tax on eligible items like clothing, shoes, and school supplies that are under $100. Even online purchases are included in the tax exemption. However, items over $100 will still be subject to sales tax. It is a great opportunity for parents to save money on their children’s school supplies.

Music beyond academics: Mississippi College students carve out independent music scene
SUMMARY: Mississippi College in Clinton fosters musical talent through its Department of Music and beyond. Students like Nate Brock, who formed the band Broken Halos during the COVID-19 pandemic, combine indie rock with Southern influences. The Institute for Southern Storytelling, originally focused on literature, now supports student musicians by offering unique opportunities like live recordings. Students like Gabe Williams, a Christian solo artist, use the institute’s resources to create music with spiritual themes. These “dorm-room producers” are proving that creativity and community are key to launching successful musical careers, even without formal training or access to professional studios.

NFL fines Atlanta Falcons following prank call to Shedeur Sanders
SUMMARY: The Atlanta Falcons were fined $250,000 and Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich $100,000 after Ulbrich’s son, Jax, participated in a prank call to Shedeur Sanders during the NFL draft. Jax accidentally found Sanders’ draft contact number on an open iPad at home and handed it to a friend who made the prank call. The Falcons accepted the NFL’s discipline, apologized to Sanders and his family, and emphasized continued adherence to security policies. Jax and the Ulbrich family are working on community service related to the incident. The NFL is still investigating other prank calls made during the draft, unrelated to the Falcons case.
