Mississippi Supreme Court denies rehearing appeal from 2017 Memorial Weekend killer
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court denied a second appeal to uphold Willie Cory Godbolt’s conviction for killing eight people in 2017. Originally sentenced to death and life imprisonment in 2020, Godbolt murdered the victims at three locations over two days in Lincoln County. The court found sufficient evidence to maintain the conviction despite arguments for a fair trial and venue change to DeSoto County. Godbolt claimed he was not given a fair trial due to juror ties to law enforcement and argued the crimes were separate incidents. However, the court noted the premeditated nature of the murders. His rehearing motion was denied, and no execution date is set.
