Weather Why: What is a tropical invest?
SUMMARY: A tropical invest is an area under investigation for tropical activity but not yet named. These areas often bring heavy rain but typically don’t strengthen rapidly. When an invest develops a closed circulation, a well-defined center, and organized thunderstorms around the center, it becomes a tropical system. Tropical systems are classified by wind speeds: less than 39 mph is a tropical depression, 39 mph or greater is a tropical storm, and 74 mph or higher is a hurricane. Invests are numbered 90 to 99, cycling back to 90 after 99, with a letter suffix indicating the ocean basin, such as “L” for Atlantic.
‘Invest’ is typically used to describe disturbances that have not yet been named.

Although not expected to be significant, it will bring several days of rainfall and possible coastal flooding. Today’s heat advisory warns of dangerous afternoon highs near 108°F. Rainfall will cool temperatures to the upper 80s by week’s end, but warmth in the 90s will return early next week as rain diminishes.

Meeting the newly elected mayors: Chatting with Long Beach Mayor Tim Pierce
SUMMARY: Long Beach’s new mayor, Tim Pierce, began his term on July 1st and is focused on key city priorities. A major project is repairing the harbor, damaged by Hurricane Zeta in 2020, through grants beyond FEMA aid. The harbor restoration is vital for community recreation and local businesses. The ongoing Gateway Project aims to improve amenities and connections between the harbor’s south side and downtown. Downtown Long Beach is also growing with new hotels, restaurants, and activities to boost the business district, addressing the city’s reliance on homeowners for tax revenue. The potential casino at the old Kmart site faces challenges due to land ownership and pricing.
