Mississippi state health officer warns of tick-borne illness risk during summer
SUMMARY: Summer in Mississippi means more outdoor fun but also increased tick activity. State Health Officer Dr. Dan Edney warns that tick bites can cause serious illnesses like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease, with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever being the most common here. He recommends checking children twice daily for ticks and watching for rashes, especially bullseye patterns, which require immediate medical care. Despite these risks, Edney encourages outdoor play with safety precautions. Additionally, residents should be cautious of West Nile Virus spread by mosquitoes and sick birds.
