Mississippi should revive process to put issues on ballot, Secretary of State Watson says
SUMMARY: Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson is pushing for the revival of a process that allows voters to put initiatives on the statewide ballot. The state has been without initiatives since May 2021, when the Supreme Court ruled the process invalid due to outdated congressional districts. Watson believes the signature threshold should be higher than the previous requirement of 106,200 signatures, in order to reduce the influence of outside groups. The move comes after initiatives in other states aimed at preserving abortion access, following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Watson is seeking a second term as Secretary of State, with Democrat Ty Pinkins challenging him in the election.
