Mississippi Senate passes bill creating task force to assess seafood labeling policy
SUMMARY: Legislation in Mississippi aimed at improving seafood transparency has been modified to establish a “Mississippi Seafood Labeling Task Force” instead of directly expanding existing country-of-origin labeling laws. Initially passed unanimously in the House, House Bill 602 was significantly altered by the Senate. The task force will include state officials and industry representatives to address seafood labeling issues, including genetic testing and marketing strategies for local seafood. The law currently requires transparency for shrimp and crawfish but advocates seek broader regulations. Mislabeling of seafood, notably following a high-profile case involving a Biloxi restaurant, has raised concerns about consumer trust.

Mississippi State joining nationwide effort to combat pesticide-resistant weeds
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University is one of 10 land-grant universities leading a national effort to combat pesticide-resistant weeds threatening soybean production. Supported by a $500,000 grant from the United Soybean Board and HERMON, researchers aim to monitor resistance evolution, standardize diagnostic protocols, and improve weed-management strategies. Mississippi State serves as the southern hub, focusing on resistance in grasses typical to southern soybean systems. The project investigates resistance to both pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides, expanding beyond past research. Participating universities include Kansas State, Penn State, and Texas A&M. Herbicide-resistant weeds cost U.S. soybean producers over $2 billion annually, underscoring the initiative’s importance.

NFL star helps unveil vending machine with free opioid-fighting medicine
SUMMARY: Tennessee Titans defensive end Jeffery Simmons is supporting Mississippi through youth football camps and public health efforts. After hosting a free camp in Starkville, Simmons helped unveil a naloxone vending machine at Jackson Medical Mall, providing free opioid overdose medication to combat rising overdose cases in the capital. Naloxone rapidly reverses opioid overdoses and saves lives by bridging time until medical help arrives. Simmons, featured in Fund Recovery’s “Tackle Overdose Now” campaign, chose Jackson for its high overdose rates. Mississippi saw a drop in suspected overdose deaths from over 200 in 2023 to 146 in 2024, partly credited to naloxone distribution. Simmons emphasizes youth support as key to the future.
