Mississippi school district named in desegregation lawsuit is allowed to shed federal supervision
SUMMARY: A majority-Black Mississippi school district, the Meridian Public School District, has been granted approval by a federal judge to end federal supervision in a decades-old desegregation lawsuit. The lawsuit included a 2013 order to address the disproportionately harsh discipline faced by Black students. The district has been praised for reducing the number of suspensions and moving away from a “school-to-prison pipeline.” The district's superintendent, Amy Carter, stated that they have implemented positive behavior intervention programs and leadership development programs. The Meridian district has seen a significant decrease in student suspensions and has received support from the Justice Department and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.

How gas prices have changed in Mississippi in the last week
SUMMARY: Gas prices have remained relatively stable over the past week, sitting about 20 cents higher than the previous year. This increase is largely due to the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to cut oil production until the end of 2023. Additionally, lower refinery utilization rates have contributed to slightly higher prices in certain regions, such as the Midwest. These higher gas prices have played a role in the persistently high inflation rate seen in August. States with the largest increases in gas prices include Nevada, California, and Arizona. In Mississippi, gas prices currently sit at $3.29.
