Mississippi railroad crossings pose danger to drivers, spark call for action
SUMMARY: Railroad crossings along the Mississippi Gulf Coast have become increasingly dangerous, with Harrison County reporting the highest number of train accidents in 2024—65 crashes and at least 14 fatalities recorded. Community members, including lifelong residents like Sunny D, are calling for change, citing long-overdue issues with crossing safety. The Mississippi Department of Transportation is initiating a $4 million federally funded project to improve crossings, starting in Long Beach. This new approach focuses on redesigning steep crossings to prevent vehicles from getting stuck, with additional upgrades planned for other areas. In the meantime, drivers are advised to exercise caution.
To begin addressing concerns over safety at railroad crossings, MDOT selected Long Beach as the pilot city for its railroad crossing improvement program.
