Mississippi lawmaker calls for probe into Rankin County Sheriff’s Office

SUMMARY: Former Rankin County deputies Christian Dedmon, Hunter Elward, Brett McAlpin, Jeffrey Middleton, and Daniel Opdyke, along with former Richland police officer Joshua Hartfield, have been charged with conspiracy against rights and obstruction of justice. In January, they raided a Braxton home where they physically assaulted and tortured Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker. Representative Chris Bell of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus believes there is still work to be done and calls for a full investigation into the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department and any other law enforcement agency with similar issues. The officers will be sentenced in federal court in November and also face state charges.
