Mississippi justices reject latest appeal from man on death row since 1976
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously denied an appeal from Richard Gerald Jordan, the state‘s longest-serving death row inmate, who was sentenced in 1976 for kidnapping and murdering Edwina Marter. Jordan’s attorney argued that he was denied due process because a court-appointed psychiatric examiner, rather than an independent one for his defense, evaluated him. The court ruled this issue had been previously addressed, and a federal judge found no violation of Jordan’s rights. While Jordan’s legal team is exploring further options, including requesting a rehearing, the ruling may allow the state to set a new execution date.
