SUMMARY: A troubling trend in Mississippi’s treatment of people in need of mental health treatment has been uncovered, with hundreds of them being put behind bars without being charged with a crime. Civil commitment, a legal process to ensure individuals suffering from serious mental illness receive treatment, often leads to incarceration due to a lack of treatment facilities and a law that permits jail usage. This process can last for weeks or months, with little to no access to medication or therapy. As a result, trust in the system is diminished, and some individuals may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or even die while in jail.

Journalist Isabelle Taft walks us through the latest findings on civil commitments and their use in keeping people with mental health problems in jail, without criminal charges.
