Mississippi 'Goon Squad' member files sentencing appeal

SUMMARY: Brett McAlpin, a member of the Rankin County ‘Goon Squad,’ has appealed his sentence of over 27 years in prison for torturing two Black men in January 2023. McAlpin, who pled guilty alongside five other former officers, is seeking to be resentenced, claiming his original sentence was miscalculated and his actions were non-violent. The victims, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, endured severe abuse, including assaults with stun guns and mock executions, while racially charged language was used against them. Jenkins and Parker have since filed a $400 million civil lawsuit against the department.
