Mississippi Fire Dogs returning to the field in 2026
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Fire Dogs are returning to the football field in 2026 after a 20-year hiatus. Team owner Luke Gray discusses the team’s structure, which targets players aged 18-30, including former high school athletes. They will compete against 10 teams across the West and East divisions, with matches in regions like Alabama and New Orleans. The Fire Dogs are running a “Name Our Mascot” contest with Café 871, with submissions open until the 9th and a winner announced on the 16th. Additionally, they will host an “After Turkey Day Bash” on December 7, featuring live music and food. Gray emphasizes the team’s commitment to local investment and community engagement.
A franchise familiar to South Mississippi for more than 20 years is set to hit the field again in 2026.

Digital Desk: Possible showers and storms Saturday afternoon (6/14/25)
SUMMARY: Good morning, South Mississippi. Today will be busy with scattered showers and storms starting around noon or 1 p.m., similar to recent days. Storms are scattered, some may be strong with frequent lightning, small hail, or gusty winds up to 50 mph but no severe weather is expected. This activity is enhanced by a slow-moving low-pressure system causing above-average rainfall this week. Showers will taper off by late evening as the sun sets. Tomorrow, rain chances decrease slightly with continued afternoon storms, especially on Father’s Day. The tropics remain quiet with no storms expected in the next 5-7 days.
Meteorologist Aaron Colby has an update on the radar, with some possible showers and storms Saturday afternoon.

Mississippi shrimp season to open soon
SUMMARY: The Mississippi shrimp season is set to open soon, though the exact date could be postponed depending on sampling results. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) requires that anyone transporting shrimp from Mississippi waters be licensed before entering the water. MDMR will continue sampling prior to the season opening to monitor shrimp movement. If sampling indicates a large movement of juvenile brown shrimp into the area, the season start may be delayed. Rain chances are expected this weekend, but shrimp transport regulations and monitoring remain in effect to ensure a responsible harvest.
Shrimpers will be able to drop their nets in state territorial waters at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 23.
