Mississippi court affirms conviction in attempted murder of judge

SUMMARY: Ernest Edwards was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for attempting to kill Lauderdale County Chancery Court Judge Charles Smith. The Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction, stating that testimony from law enforcement officers regarding information they received during the investigation was not hearsay and did not violate Edwards’ right to confront the witnesses against him. Smith was shot in the back while getting out of his truck at the Lauderdale County courthouse in 2020 and was critically wounded but returned to the bench after two months of recovery. The trial was moved to Lafayette County, and Edwards’ objections to the testimony were overruled.
