Mississippi couple pledges $25 million to boost cancer care efforts statewide
SUMMARY: The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) will receive a historic $25 million donation from John and Sandy Black to expand its Cancer Center and Research Institute, marking the largest gift commitment in its history. This funding aims to address Mississippi’s high cancer mortality rates by constructing a new 250,000-square-foot facility that enhances patient care and fosters research. UMMC’s goal is to achieve National Cancer Institute designation to improve services, allowing patients to receive care locally rather than traveling out of state. The Blacks also previously donated $11 million in 2015, showcasing their ongoing commitment to cancer care advancements in Mississippi.

Mississippi Senate passes bill to implement no-excuse early voting
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s Senate has approved the “In-Person Early Voting Act,” which would allow registered voters to cast ballots up to 15 days before an election without needing an excuse. This would replace the current 45-day absentee voting period. Supporters argue it provides convenience for voters, especially those with scheduling difficulties. However, the bill faces opposition, with concerns about litigation and resistance from many circuit clerks. Despite this, the bill passed with bipartisan support and will now move to the House. Governor Tate Reeves, however, has expressed opposition to no-excuse early voting, which is already in place in 47 states.
