Mississippi Book Festival makes first round of author announcements

2025-26 conference schedules released for Ole Miss, Mississippi State men’s basketball
SUMMARY: Ole Miss and Mississippi State men’s basketball programs have released their finalized SEC schedules for the 2025-26 season. Ole Miss, led by Chris Beard, begins conference play on Jan. 3 at Oklahoma, with notable games against rivals Mississippi State on Jan. 17 and Feb. 14. Incumbents hold mostly strong in Mississippi’s special legislative primary elections
SUMMARY: Mississippi held primary elections for 14 reshuffled House and Senate seats after a federal ruling addressed dilution of Black voting power. Seven seats had contested primaries. The notable upset was in Senate District 42, where Republican incumbent Robin Robinson lost to Don Hartness, who garnered over 70% support. Other incumbents like Sen. Michael McLendon (District 1), Sen. Reginald Jackson (District 11), and Sen. Chris Johnson (District 44) retained their seats. Several candidates, including Rickey Thompson (House District 16) and Kabir Karriem (House District 41), won decisively. General election matchups for November 4 are set, with some candidates running unopposed.

Mississippi College to support Jackson VA with student counselors
SUMMARY: Mississippi College (MC) has partnered with the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson to provide clinical training for counseling students. Through a memorandum of understanding, MC will send qualified counseling students to the VA, allowing them to gain hands-on experience by offering mental health services to veterans under supervision. Students begin working at the VA after completing core courses and entering the clinical phase, where they will manage treatment plans and case notes. This new affiliation, starting this fall, aims to reduce veterans’ wait times and enhance access to counseling, marking MC’s first collaboration with a VA Medical Center.
