Migrant workers helping with relief efforts from Hurricane Helene
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen caused significant damage over 400 miles inland, particularly affecting Eastern Tennessee where homes and businesses were devastated. Hundreds of migrant workers, like Maria Guzman and Leardo Sanchez, are now cleaning up at the Smoky Mountain Family Farm in Newport, which faced crop destruction worth millions. Workers have shifted from harvesting tomatoes to addressing the aftermath of mudslides. The farm employs around 800 migrants annually and manages nearly 3,000 acres. Since the floods, at least 500 migrants have left to find work at sister farms in Florida and Georgia or to return to Mexico after their contracts end.
Though Hurricane Helene caused damage to millions worth of crops, migrant workers in the area are still hard at work while at the farms.
