MID offers tips as winter solstice approaches
SUMMARY: As winter approaches in Mississippi, the Insurance Department advises residents to prepare for possible cold weather hazards. Winter, starting on December 21, may bring risks such as roof and plumbing damage. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney recommends that property owners trim problematic tree branches, clean gutters, secure ladders for debris removal, and evaluate attic insulation. To prevent frozen pipes, homeowners should disconnect garden hoses and winterize their homes. Letting faucets drip and opening cabinet doors can protect interior pipes. The National Weather Service also warns about the dangers of frostbite and hypothermia during extreme cold.

‘No red flags’: Chris Beard remains hopeful French guard can soon arrive at Ole Miss
SUMMARY: The Ole Miss basketball team has been active with team-building and workouts, but new French guard Ilias Kamardine has yet to arrive due to visa and eligibility delays. Coach Chris Beard explained that processing of I-20 forms, necessary for nonimmigrant student status, has been slow following a temporary pause on visa appointments affecting international students. Beard remains optimistic that these issues will be resolved well before the 2026-27 season starts. Kamardine, a 6-foot-5 athletic guard who starred in France and led his team to a U20 Eurobasket title, will undergo a catch-up process once he joins the team. Meanwhile, the roster is being revamped with numerous transfers and newcomers alongside returning players Malik Dia and Eduardo Klafke.

Mississippi State selected to develop energy-efficient autonomous flight systems
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University’s Raspet Flight Research Laboratory has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense to contribute to DARPA’s Albatross program, aiming to develop energy-efficient autonomous flight systems using environmental energy sources like thermals and wind. The program targets a 75% reduction in energy use for fixed-wing aircraft, significantly surpassing industry norms. Raspet will lead a multi-university collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, developing novel sensing algorithms and global weather models to enhance dynamic soaring for uncrewed aerial systems. The lab will handle testing, evaluation, and flight safety for Albatross prototypes.
