Memorial Day could have started in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Memorial Day, a national holiday in the United States, originated from the Civil War. However, the official founding location of Memorial Day is contested, with multiple states claiming credit. In 1966, the US Congress awarded Waterloo, New York as the place of origin for Memorial Day, but some historians believe this attribution to be dubious. Veteran and military author Dr. Sidney Bondurant thinks that the holiday should be credited to Columbus, Mississippi, due to an event in 1866 where ladies laid flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers.
