SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is celebrating a record $1.2 billion in approved infrastructure projects for Fiscal Year 2024, surpassing the previous record by $255 million. This achievement is attributed to increased funding and improved efficiency. Major projects include the Ripley Bypass, bridge construction on State Route 8, and Phase II of the U.S. 82 Greenville Bypass. The Mississippi Legislature allocated $620 million to MDOT, and additional federal funding came through $220 million in grants. MDOT also initiated several other projects, including resurfacing I-55 and widening I-10. Despite this funding, MDOT seeks further investments for future capacity projects.

SUMMARY: State health officials in Mississippi have confirmed a bat tested positive for rabies in the northern part of the state. The Mississippi Board of Animal Health (MBAH) was informed by the state Department of Health (MSDH). Two dogs possibly exposed to the rabid bat have been quarantined. Since 1961, Mississippi has had only two confirmed rabies cases in humans and animals, both linked to infected bats. Officials stress the importance of vaccinating pets and avoiding contact with wild animals like bats, raccoons, and foxes. If bitten by a potentially rabid animal, individuals should seek medical treatment promptly.

SUMMARY: Months after Starkville’s only hospital went up for sale, the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors has selected Baptist Memorial Health Care as the potential buyer of Oktibbeha County Hospital (OCH) Regional Medical Center. The decision follows discussions with stakeholders, including Mississippi State University and the Greater Starkville Development Partnership. The county government, which has controlled OCH since 1973, determined that selling the hospital was necessary due to financial challenges and residents seeking care at other hospitals. The sale is expected to finalize by summer or early fall. Baptist Memorial Health Care, based in Memphis, owns multiple hospitals in Mississippi.
