Mississippi State joining nationwide effort to combat pesticide-resistant weeds
SUMMARY: Mississippi State University is one of 10 land-grant universities leading a national effort to combat pesticide-resistant weeds threatening soybean production. Supported by a $500,000 grant from the United Soybean Board and HERMON, researchers aim to monitor resistance evolution, standardize diagnostic protocols, and improve weed-management strategies. Mississippi State serves as the southern hub, focusing on resistance in grasses typical to southern soybean systems. The project investigates resistance to both pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides, expanding beyond past research. Participating universities include Kansas State, Penn State, and Texas A&M. Herbicide-resistant weeds cost U.S. soybean producers over $2 billion annually, underscoring the initiative’s importance.
