SUMMARY: Madison Central High School in the metro area recently held an active shooter drill, partnering with police, firefighters, and paramedics. During the drill, members of the SWAT team rushed into the building to simulate a response to multiple active shooters. School employees volunteered to role-play the drill, while parents and students were surprised to see emergency lights and a medical helicopter in the school parking lot. The drill took place a few hours after a man opened fire at a private school in Memphis. The Madison Central drill was based on a system developed by Texas State University called ALERT for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training. Teachers also received specific training on how to respond to an active shooter situation.
