Lucedale man sentenced to 40 years for ATV crash that killed 2, injured 1

SUMMARY: Derrick Chavers, 38, from Lucedale, has been sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter and aggravated assault after fatally crashing his ATV into a party crowd in Leakesville, killing two people aged 17 and 23, and seriously injuring a 25-year-old. The 2020 incident occurred when Chavers, reportedly with impaired judgment, drove at double the speed limit into the group, including brothers Christopher and Wesley Smith, who were outside following a fight. The survivor, Christopher Smith, recounted the event to WKRG. Chavers had arrived uninvited at the party.

New marker unveiled on Elvis’ Tupelo Driving Tour

Ole Miss linebacker Tyler Banks earns Chucky Mullins Courage Award

SUMMARY: Ole Miss linebacker Tyler Banks has been named the 2025 Chucky Mullins Courage Award winner and will wear the No. 38 jersey in honor of Mullins. Banks, a senior from Virginia and three-year letterwinner, is the 35th recipient of the award, which honors Mullins, who was paralyzed during a 1989 game and passed away in 1991. Head coach Lane Kiffin praised Banks for his perseverance, leadership, and dedication on and off the field. Banks has played in all 39 games since 2022, mainly on special teams, and serves on the SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The award recognizes courage and determination.
