Legislation introduced creating ‘Purple Alert’ for missing people with cognitive disabilities
SUMMARY: Mississippi House has proposed House Bill 873, aiming to create the Purple Alert, an initiative to locate missing individuals with cognitive disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. This alert mechanism, introduced by Rep. Clay Mansell, would operate similarly to Amber and Silver Alerts. It would engage law enforcement and the public in the search by broadcasting through the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Proponent Mika Hartman, whose son has Down syndrome, emphasizes the added safety and reassurance for affected families. The bill, inspired by similar legislation in Florida, is currently under committee review.
