SUMMARY: A US District Court has placed a hold on a piece of legislation in Mississippi that would ban ballot harvesting. Judge Henry Wingate handed down the order, stating that the recently enacted Senate Bill 2358 does not provide adequate parameters on who can collect ballots. The bill enacted penalties for individuals found guilty of improperly collecting absentee ballots, but listed exceptions for certain election officials and individuals allowed by federal law to collect mail. Wingate argued that the legislation could prohibit disabled voters from receiving assistance and questioned the widespread ballot harvesting problem in Mississippi. Governor Tate Reeves supports high election integrity while making it easy for residents to vote.
