High awards compel businesses to settle cases for millions, such as a $50 million dental malpractice verdict and a $1.7 billion verdict against Ford, later overturned. Annually, these verdicts create a “tort tax” costing each Georgian approximately $1,372.94 and result in the loss of 137,658 jobs. State officials, including Gov. Brian Kemp, are prioritizing tort reform in the upcoming legislative session to mitigate these issues.
