Postmaster spars with Georgia congressman during contentious hearing | Georgia
SUMMARY: U.S. Postmaster Louis DeJoy faced tough questioning from the House Oversight Committee regarding mail delivery issues and the postal service’s financial struggles. Georgia lawmakers criticized delivery performance, particularly the 40% on-time rate, while DeJoy claimed a 75% rate in the state. Committee members shared constituent complaints about delayed bills, penalties, and essential items. The postal service faces a $10 billion loss this year. DeJoy defended his actions, blaming Congress for past issues. He also introduced a 10-year restructuring plan to address service problems. Georgia lawmakers have criticized this plan, and Senator Jon Ossoff introduced legislation to reform the postmaster appointment process.

Report says excessive jury awards costing Georgians | Georgia
SUMMARY: A report by the American Tort Reform Association highlights that “nuclear verdicts” over $10 million are financially impacting Georgians and leading to job losses, with Georgia ranked fourth in the “Judicial Hellholes” report. High awards compel businesses to settle cases for millions, such as a $50 million dental malpractice verdict and a $1.7 billion verdict against Ford, later overturned. Annually, these verdicts create a “tort tax” costing each Georgian approximately $1,372.94 and result in the loss of 137,658 jobs. State officials, including Gov. Brian Kemp, are prioritizing tort reform in the upcoming legislative session to mitigate these issues.
