Book Club: 'Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy' by Jeffrey Boutwell
SUMMARY: “Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy” by Jeffrey Boutwell is a biography of George Sewall Boutwell, a prominent 19th-century political figure. The term “radical Republican” referred to the progressive wing of the Republican Party during and after the Civil War, advocating emancipation and civil rights for freed slaves. Boutwell had a distinguished 65-year career, working with Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant, opposing the annexation of the Philippines, and investigating election violence in Mississippi during Reconstruction. The author, a descendant of Boutwell, emphasizes his overlooked but significant role in American history. The book signing is held at Pass Christian Books.
