John Dolusic explains how a tornado forms
SUMMARY: Today marks another day in Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week. WTV media’s John Delk discusses tornadoes, noting that while calm weather prevails now, October and November can bring secondary severe weather. Tornadoes develop with strong surface winds from the south and southeast, combined with strong upper air winds, causing rotation. Warm air rises and cold air sinks, generating circulation that can create a wall cloud. If this wall cloud extends to the ground, it forms a tornado, which can vary in intensity from EF0 to EF5. Recent examples include the EF3 tornadoes in Amry and Tupelo, and the devastating EF4 in Rolling Fork.

Watch Back to School Leadership and Policy on Aug. 1
SUMMARY: Crime can still impact a city’s reputation. As the new school year begins across the metro area, 16 WAPT interviewed three superintendents: Dr. Mitchell Shears, Dr. Errick Greene, and Chris Chism, who lead the Hinds, Jackson, and Pearl school districts. They discussed plans to support teachers and students, especially regarding the use of electronics. While not banning devices outright, the districts emphasize purposeful use in a digital society and integrate new technologies, including artificial intelligence, into learning. The focus also includes preparing students for college and the workforce through internships and supporting teachers to enhance education and community investment.

Safe Haven Baby Box opens in Gluckstadt
SUMMARY: On Wednesday, the city of Gluckstadt unveiled a new Safe Haven Baby Box in the parking lot of its new Police Station and Municipal Court. Funded by CPS Pools and Spas and community donors, the baby box offers a safe way for individuals to surrender infants anonymously, removing shame and blame. Mayor and residents expressed gratitude, citing the box as a vital alternative to save lives. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, creator of the Mississippi Access to Maternal Assistance app, praised the growing number of baby boxes statewide, now totaling six. Gluckstadt became a city in 2021 and recently opened its first dedicated police building. Police Chief Hale noted they have 20 officers with new facilities including a dispatch center and courtroom.

Jones County investigators work to solve 2011 cold case
SUMMARY: Jones County cold case investigators seek help solving the 2011 murder of Charles “Charlie” Adcock. Adcock was found shot in the head inside his Ellisville home on June 23, the same day his Waynesboro pawn shop was burglarized. Waynesboro police had requested to check on him but couldn’t reach him; his daughter said Sayto Ford arrived first and found the body. Handguns, cash, and keys to his vehicle and businesses were missing. Witnesses reported a Black woman came to Adcock’s door the night before asking for help, believed to be a decoy. Two men were seen waiting in a sedan, possibly a Pontiac. Investigators suspect gang involvement possibly linked to Adcock’s daughter. Motive may involve money Ford sought from Adcock, which he refused. Anyone with information is urged to call authorities.
