Jackson Public School Board of Trustees approves optimization plan
SUMMARY: JPS approved an optimization plan in a 5-1 vote, initially considering closing or consolidating 16 schools. In December, three schools were removed from the closure list. The public spoke out against the closures, with one board member’s amendment to remove another school from the list failing. Superintendent Dr. Errick Greene emphasized the importance of addressing infrastructure and staffing issues, with JPS losing over 9,500 students and having 400 staffing vacancies. The proposed closures are not performance-based but due to enrollment decline, facility issues, and staffing problems. The plan could save over $17 million per year and $174 million in renovation costs. Leaders want the buildings to benefit community development.
