Jackson nonprofit working to get homeless inside shelters amid frigid temperatures

SUMMARY: As Mississippi grapples with hazardous winter conditions, a Jackson nonprofit is providing shelter at Shepard’s Gym near Jim Hill High School for the homeless affected by the cold weather. Teresa Renkenberger from Shower Power coordinated with local officials, the Red Cross, and the People’s Advocacy Institute to offer the venue, where guests will receive three meals a day, cots, blankets, and essentials. Volunteers will scour the city to bring people to the shelter, which is open until January 21. Despite their efforts, the demand for shelter in Jackson and statewide exceeds available space. Additional shelters are open across the state.

Mississippi native Jamal Roberts advances to ‘American Idol’ top 3

Sen. Hyde-Smith honors fallen Mississippi officers in National Police Week tribute
