Jackson leaders address sewer issues at Habitat homes

Despite reaching out to the state multiple times for additional help, Habitat homeowners have received no assistance. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba estimates that fixing Jackson’s sewer collection system will require billions of dollars, which the city currently does not have. City Attorney Torri Martin states that public works crews have made repeated trips to fix the problem, and the city has been responsive to resident complaints. However, the accumulated issue cannot be resolved overnight, and the city asks for patience and communication from residents. Jackson is currently under an EPA consent decree, and third-party manager Ted Henifin is now in charge of the sewer system.
