‘It’s a crisis’: Holly Springs residents say they’ve been randomly losing power for 5 years
SUMMARY: North Mississippi has been enduring frequent power outages, blamed on the Holly Springs Utility Department’s (HSUD) poor management and aging infrastructure. With 133 outages in 90 days, residents have suffered through constant disruptions, including times of clear weather. The HSUD hasn’t provided crucial financial reports to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), complicating oversight and resolution efforts. Service conditions are so deteriorated that external power workers won’t assist. The HSUD, predominantly serving non-city residents, has provided insufficient services despite users paying their bills. To combat this, Senate Bill 2453 aims to empower the state’s public service commission to hold utility providers accountable, including revoking operating rights if services are deemed inadequate.

Mississippi governor deploying national guard troops to Washington, D.C.
SUMMARY: Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves approved deploying 200 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., backing President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police force and surge of federal agents. Trump’s move follows rising violent crime, including the recent assault of a government employee and last year’s fatal carjacking of former official Mike Gill. Reeves said the Guard will help “restore law and order” and ensure public safety. Trump has 30 days of emergency control but may extend it through a national emergency. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing over the takeover. Other GOP governors are also sending troops.
