SUMMARY: The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office has approved a contract with a private prison to transfer 200 detainees from the Raymond Detention Center to a jail in the Delta. There were 599 detainees at the troubled Raymond facility, which is more than double the number during the COVID pandemic. The Board of Supervisors voted to approve the new contract with Core Civic, which operates a private prison in Tallahatchie County. Sheriff Tyree Jones stated that the incident occurred in a problematic pod, and while no detainees were hurt, one detention officer was injured. The disturbance was not classified as a riot.
