SUMMARY: Following Dau Mabil’s mysterious death, a Hinds County judge ruled on his body’s handling amidst a lawsuit between his widow, Karissa Bowley, and brother, Bul Mabil. Judge Dewayne Thomas granted Bowley’s request to replace Bul as the plaintiff, acknowledging her next of kin status despite their separation at Mabil’s disappearance. Thomas also permitted an independent autopsy directed and funded by Bul, who doubts the investigation’s thoroughness. Mabil’s body is with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) pending their autopsy. Statewide attention has led Bowley to agree to publicly share the autopsy findings. Mabil, a Sudanese immigrant, vanished on March 25 and was found deceased in the Pearl River.

The commission may seek to place HSUD under third-party receivership. Despite leadership changes and cooperation from the new mayor, no viable plan to fix HSUD has been presented, prompting regulatory enforcement.
