Hurricane Helene forms, to become dangerous Cat. 3 storm before Florida landfall
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen is intensifying and is expected to make landfall near Tallahassee as a major Category 3 hurricane, impacting areas from the Florida Panhandle to Georgia. The storm’s broad wind reach may result in tropical storm-force winds across the Florida Peninsula, particularly east of I-75. Significant tree growth in Tallahassee poses a risk to power infrastructure due to potential power outages. The storm could also spawn tornadoes, particularly during heavy rains. As Helen approaches, Orlando is under a tropical storm warning, anticipating gusts up to 55 mph. Continuous updates will be provided throughout the day.
Helene strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday and is projected to intensify into a major hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico on its approach to Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

What to know if you’re at risk of having your wages garnished over student loan debt
SUMMARY: Millions of student borrowers may face wage garnishment as early as this summer, with an estimated 3 million entering default by August and another 2 million by September. Default occurs after 270 days of missed payments, risking up to 15% wage garnishment to repay debt. The pandemic payment pause ended in May, and a Biden-era grace period protecting credit scores has lapsed, causing credit damage for many. Borrowers should check their loan status on studentaid.gov and consider rehabilitation or consolidation to avoid default. The Department of Education will notify borrowers 30 days before garnishment, allowing requests for hardship hearings to reduce or delay wage deductions.

A Tunisian musician was detained in LA after living in US for a decade. His doctor wife speaks out
SUMMARY: Dr. Wafaa Alrashid, chief medical officer at Huntington Hospital, witnessed fear among Latino patients amid immigration raids in Southern California. Her husband, Rami Othmane, a Tunisian musician with a pending green card, was arrested despite showing his paperwork. Living in the U.S. since 2015 and married to Alrashid in 2025, his deportation order had been dismissed in 2020. Held in harsh ICE conditions, Othmane’s detention sparked protests featuring musicians and activists. After being transferred to Arizona with a swollen leg, Alrashid hopes for his bail as legal proceedings continue, while she anxiously awaits further contact.

DeSantis responds to Orange County mayor on removal of undocumented migrants
SUMMARY: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis defended immigration enforcement efforts after Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings initially refused to sign the 287(g) agreement allowing local law enforcement to assist ICE. Demings later signed an updated version addressing civil rights and local responsibilities, pending county board approval. Attorney General James Uthmeier praised Demings’ change in position, though Demings criticized Uthmeier for personal attacks. DeSantis stressed the importance of public safety and rule of law and applauded Florida Highway Patrol’s partnership with ICE, promising pay raises for troopers. Democratic Rep. Anna Eskamani condemned the initiative as politically motivated and harmful to immigrant communities.
