Hillsborough Street, I 440 gas leak closure near state fair could last into Tuesday afternoon

SUMMARY: Traffic on I-440 at Hillsboro Street is severely impacted due to a gas leak, causing road closures in both directions. Crews are expected to take several hours to cap the leak and begin repairs. The gas leak, detected near an overpass, prompted police to issue the road closures for safety. A gas leak closed Hillsborough Street in both directions at Interstate 440 in west Raleigh Tuesday, complicating commutes for drivers headed to the North Carolina State Fair.

Before 9:30 a.m., the road was closed between Beryl Road and Blue Ridge Road near the fairgrounds. I-440 between Western Boulevard and Wade Avenue was closed as well. Sky 5 flew over traffic backups all the way to Cary Parkway on I-440 North around 10 a.m.
