Hank Aaron Sports Academy hosts minority player showcase

SUMMARY: The first showcase of the summer at the Hank Aaron Sports Academy took place today for minority baseball players from Jackson and across the state. This Dusty Baker Showcase marks the start of the second annual Hank Aaron Fantastic 44 Showcase. The camp is free for the kids and funded by donations and the academy president, Tim Bennett. A 2023 study revealed a record low number of black players in the MLB since the first study in 1991. It is hoped that showcases like the Fantastic 44 will help increase these numbers.

Afternoon storms may bring gusty winds and hail, though severe weather is not expected. Monday follows a similar pattern with scattered afternoon storms. A high-pressure system will move in by Thursday, bringing well-above-average temperatures. Heat indices may reach 107–110 degrees by Friday, especially west of I-55 in Mississippi. The week ahead will remain hot and humid, with increasingly oppressive heat expected through the weekend. Stay weather-aware and hydrated amid the steamy conditions.
