SUMMARY: Google has agreed to a $700 million settlement following a 2021 lawsuit by all 50 states, accusing it of anticompetitive behavior in its Play Store operations. Customers affected by Google’s conduct from August 2016 to September 2023 will receive $630 million of the settlement automatically via PayPal, Venmo, check, or ACH transfer. The lawsuit accused Google of impeding competition through contracts, buy-offs, and technical barriers. Alongside consumer restitution, Google will pay states $70 million and must reform its practices, allowing alternative payment systems and app store access, lowering app warnings, and facilitating third-party app updates for a specified period. An independent monitor will oversee compliance.
