SUMMARY: Former Kentucky police officer Brett Hinson has been convicted on federal charges for using excessive force during a botched 2020 drug raid that resulted in the death of Breonna Taylor in her Louisville apartment. Hinson, 48, fired 10 shots into Taylor’s door and windows, although he did not hit anyone. His defense claimed he acted to protect fellow officers after Taylor’s boyfriend fired at them. The jury’s emotional response was noted as this marks the first conviction of a Louisville officer linked to the deadly raid. Hinson faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

One of the officers involved in the raid that killed Breonna Taylor was convicted Friday.

SUMMARY: The U.S. is on “La Niña watch,” with the Climate Prediction Center forecasting a short, weak La Niña forming this fall, similar to last winter. Despite its weakness, La Niña influences weather patterns: typically causing drier, warmer conditions in the southern U.S. and northern Mexico, and wetter weather in the Pacific Northwest and Ohio Valley. Last winter reflected these trends, though some areas like east Texas and Kentucky saw wetter conditions. La Niña’s strongest impact usually occurs in winter months and may also intensify the hurricane season, with NOAA predicting a 50% chance of an above-normal hurricane season this year.

SUMMARY: A survey by the New Jersey Real Estate Network, involving 3,012 participants, ranked the top 100 ugliest public buildings in the U.S. Tennessee had two entries: Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum ranked 46th, criticized for its 1961 mid-century blocky design catering more to capacity than aesthetics. The Nashville Metro Courthouse barely made the list at 100, noted for its grand but stern, classical style. Kentucky’s Owensboro City Hall was 44th, while Alabama had five entries, the most by any state. The survey’s top ugliest public building was Flint’s Municipal Center in Michigan. Many listed buildings were courthouses or judicial centers.
